What can I do if my solicitor's law firm is closing down?

Has your law firm put you on notice that they are closing? If so, they will need to follow the guidance issued by their regulator, the Solicitors Regulation Authority (“SRA”), to run-off their caseload and ensure you, and other clients, are not left unrepresented. There are many reasons why a law firm may be closing down. Possible reasons could be due to retirement, mergers, strategic restructure, SRA intervention, or external market conditions.
When this happens, the SRA will want your law firm to provide assurances and they will make arrangements for an alternative law firm to take over your case. Whichever alternative firm they recommend, you are free to choose your own alternative solicitor and you do not necessarily need to stick to the one provided to you. You should also be mindful that the alternative firm chosen for you will potentially be taking on hundreds, if not thousands, of claims and so you may be disappointed to learn that you might not receive the service you expect.
The Linking Lawyer can help. If you're unsure about the new firm, or just don't know what to look for, it's worth speaking to me to see if I can help or put you in touch with a trusted law firm or lawyer.
